Prelude to Water Melody

How long will the full moon appear?
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of the year
It would be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be
Too high and cold for me.
I rise and dance, with my shadow I play.
On high as on earth, would it be as gay?
The moon goes round the mansions red,
Through gauze-draped windows to shed,
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Against man she should have no spite.
Why then when people part, is she oft full and bright?
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man,
Will live long as he can!
Thousand miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays.

Viewing the Moon, Thinking of You

Over the sea grows the moon bright;
Far apart, we have the same moonlit night.
The affectionate would rather have the night shortened.
For I’d have a sleepless night, yearning for you.
With the candle out, I can better enjoy the moonlight indoors.
Putting on my coat, I feel the chill of dew outdoors.
The moonlight can’t be picked up and sent to you as a gift.
Better go back to bed, hoping to reunite in the dream.
花间一壶酒,独酌无相亲;
月既不解饮,影徒随我身;
我歌月徘徊,我舞影迷乱;

Drinking Alone under the Moon

Amid the flowers, from a pot of wine;
I drink alone beneath the bright moonshine,
I raise my cup to invite the Moon who blends;
Her light with my Shadow and we’re three friends.
The Moon does not know how to drink her share;
In vain my Shadow follows me here and there.
Together with them for the time I stay;
And make merry before spring’s spent away.
I sing and the Moon lingers to hear my song;
My Shadow’s a mess while I dance along.
Sober, we three remain cheerful and gay;
Drunken, we part and each may go his way.
Our friendship will outshine all earthly love,
Next time we’ll meet beyond the stars above.
